Once Bitten Twice Shy

ONCE BITTEN TWICE SHY is a witty yet poignant tale of Maxine. A professional 30 something gal that seems to have her life in order when all of a sudden she finds herself suddenly single and facing the dole queue. Her best friend Laura on the other hand appears to have it all and Maxine looks up to her and aspires to be like her friend. With her life crumbling infront of her eyes it has left Maxine baffled. What she thought and what she had assumed she knew about life, men and love comes to a complete and utter stop. Her friends support her along the way on her quest to understand life, love and what happens when love doesn’t always turn out the way you hoped for.

“And, conversely, what happened when all the deadlines were met—or well on track—but then breakup or unemployment occurred? Case in point: Maxine. First, Shamus The Shit disaster, then possible unemployment, and now never-ending anxiety over an ambiguous love interest that held her in a state of perpetual limbo. Life didn’t hold out any guarantees, but anything was still possible. This was true. What if you did have your house by thirty, travelled every few years and had a stable job that allowed you to live comfortably? Should you let the absence of a romantic relationship be the one thing that dampened an otherwise great life? Does the cherry really matter? Well, yes, M confessed to herself.”

“The heartbreak, I get. But does that mean we never take another chance?” said Laura.

“Ruefully, she thought about all those misleading and deceptive movies that led women to believe in the fairytale ending with the knight in shining armour on the white horse (or Richard Gere in a white limousine) who would save the day and then ride off into the sunset with the beautiful princess. Yeah, maybe that was a way to escape the harsh realities of life for a while, but the movies didn’t tell you what happened when the white knight didn’t show up. Or showed up and then left with another princess.”

This is Marisa’s debut fiction novel. Like many girls about town she has experienced some great and not so great dates and ‘situationships’ with men. Having heard many stories over bottles of red wine and cocktails from friends over men, their relationships and other various encounters, she discovered that women had a lot in common with each other in this area called Love. We bond over it, talk about it, support one other and have tones of different experiences. Her friends became her meal ticket and she decided to write a tale about something women know lots about. Men, Heartbreak and when will love, if it does, conquer all. Not only can women talk about love they can read about it too.

Marisa writes with such conviction, succinct dialogue and humour, describing perfectly the trials and tribulations of being an analytical female! This book is a life-line to the female friendships we form, making us laugh, cry, compare and resonant with our inner most thoughts. I am eagerly awaiting the next instalment!
