Whilst consuming my morning coffee and reading the paper one sunny morning i couldn’t help but overhear a lady chat to her friend about how text messaging is the main way of communicating and how some things were ‘misread’ by her current flame. “He just doesn’t get it” she explained. Her friend nodded and agreed but also made a exemplary observation. “Why didn’t you just call”? It was like a light bulb flashed in her eyes. She paused and replied “Yeah…i hadn’t thought of that”. In the digital age that has consumed us and given us easy effort free access to everything and any time we want it have we lost the basic etiquette of picking up the phone? Why has texting become the new black? Granted it is easy, quick and you can get immediate responses. But on the down side it can be misinterpreted, read incorrectly and dare i say it…not get the message at all. Can you imagine all the messages sitting on some cyber cloud drinking a Cosmopolitan. When did texting replace basic human interaction all together? I was at the stage when i wasn’t concentrating on the paper anymore but on the ladies and their take on the modern era of communicating. I was loving what i was hearing. They both had a point. When you talk to someone you can hear their tone, sense their mood. If they are happy, frustrated, tired, elated. Tone and delivery in speech is everything. Its a main cue. Reading something and hearing it is two different things. Reading a text is your own interpretation and can be a sure way to misunderstand without clarity. The girlfriend pointed out “Maybe if you just called him he would have understood what you meant.”
Why should calling be obsolete because we have other ways to say what we want to say? Why don’t people talk anymore? Whats the hurry. Calls are free now a days so is it because we have become lazy? Why do people ask eachother out over a text? The worst someone can say is no. Are they scared of hearing it? If a text message is unclear then ask questions to be clear. If that still isn’t working then maybe do what everyone has been doing since telecommunications was invented. Pick up the phone.
